Mecklenburg County was once one of only a handful of North Carolina counties to have its own police department. In 1993, the Charlotte Police and Mecklenburg County Police consolidated to form the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
Mecklenburg County still has its Sheriff's Office.
